Gastonia Celebrates Graduates of the 2025 Municipal Citizens’ Academy

The City of Gastonia proudly recognized the graduates of its 2025 Municipal Government Citizens’ Academy at the June 17th City Council Meeting. This annual program, held from January through June, gives residents an inside look at how their local government operates and provides an opportunity to engage directly with City leaders and staff.

Participants met twice a month on Monday evenings at 6:00 PM, with sessions held at City Hall and other municipal facilities throughout the city. Over the course of 10 sessions, they explored topics ranging from the municipal election process to the essential work of public safety, public works, planning, and more.

The Academy is a cornerstone of the City’s “Citizens First” philosophy, which emphasizes transparency, education, and resident engagement. It serves as a forum where community members gain a deeper understanding of City operations, meet the people who keep Gastonia running smoothly, and learn how to become more involved in the civic process.

“Our Municipal Citizens’ Academy helps foster stronger connections between residents and their local government,” said Assistant City Manager Quentin McPhatter, who oversees the program. “Graduates of our Citizens’ Academy will walk away with a better understanding of how the City works, how decisions are made, and how they can play a role in shaping our city’s future.”

The 2025 class included 21 participants from neighborhoods across the city, all of whom brought their own perspectives and a shared interest in community service.
