City of Gastonia Invites Developers to Reimagine Former Armory in FUSE District

The City of Gastonia is inviting developers to submit proposals for the redevelopment of the former National Guard Armory/Adult Recreation Center, a nearly 70-year-old landmark located in the heart of the growing FUSE District. This Request for Proposals (RFP) opens the door for a public-private partnership that can help shape the next chapter of one of the region’s most dynamic redevelopment areas.

“This is an exciting opportunity for a creative partner to bring new life to a property with deep community roots,” said Kristy Crisp, Director of Economic Development. “The City is committed to working with developers to ensure the project strengthens the FUSE District and complements the surrounding investments.”

The Armory property is unique in that it may qualify for historic tax credits, adding financial advantages to the project and making it attractive to a wide range of developers. The City plans to negotiate the terms of the public-private partnership after selecting a firm through the RFP process.

Over the past several years, the FUSE District has seen significant investment, including the redevelopment of Trenton Mill, the opening of Durty Bull Brewing Company, and the construction of CaroMont Health Park. Redevelopment of the Armory property will build on this momentum and continue the transformation of this mixed-use district.
