Community Based Development Organization (CBDO) and Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO)

The City of Gastonia acknowledges the needed contributions of Community Housing Development Organizations (CHDOs) and Community-Based Development Organizations (CBDOs) in advancing comprehensive community development. CHDOs are recognized for their specialized focus on affordable housing, while CBDOs are appreciated for their broader initiatives spanning social, economic, and environmental dimensions. In partnership with both CHDOs and CBDOs, the City of Gastonia aims to demonstrate its commitment to comprehensive community development, seeking sustainable improvements in the quality of life for residents.

New! Open House Event and Homebuyer Opportunity

Through a collaborative partnership with the City of Gastonia, Belmont Community Development Corporation, in its role as a Community Housing Development Organization or CHDO, constructed two (2) single-family homes, located within the Highland Neighborhood of Gastonia, NC.  An open house will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, from 3:30 pm until 5:30 pm.  Potential homebuyers must complete an application.  Additional details are listed below.

Community-Based Development Organization (CBDO)

A Community-Based Development Organization (CBDO) is a grassroots entity committed to fostering positive change and sustainable development in local communities. It ensures representation from low- and moderate-income residents, private establishments, and neighborhood organizations, comprising at least 51 percent of its governing body. CBDOs, typically nonprofit organizations, engage in specific Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funded activities, including neighborhood revitalization, community economic development, and energy conservation. To earn CBDO designation, an organization must fulfill specific criteria related to its legal status, organizational structure, capacity, and experience. 

The CBDO Schedule and application are scheduled to be release in May 2024.

Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO)

A Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) is a nonprofit organization operating at the community level, possessing staff with the capability to develop affordable housing within its community. To earn CHDO designation, an organization must fulfill specific criteria related to its legal status, organizational structure, capacity, and experience. The City of Gastonia grants CHDO designation on a project-by-project basis.
