The Avon & Catawba Creeks Greenway, Gastonia’s first and most popular greenway, has helped our community maintain mental and physical health. The City is looking to grow this community asset.
Project Background
The Avon & Catawba Creeks Greenway is Gastonia’s premier greenway and part of an ever-expanding system of off-street trails, sidewalks and local and regional destinations. Over the last several years the City has been expanding the municipal trail system north and west. With this proposed project the City will be taking the municipal trail system southeast, providing greenway access to residents in southeastern Gastonia. This project, a section of the Catawba Creek Greenway Corridor, has been on the City of Gastonia’s Greenway Plan since 2006 and is part of a major corridor in the Carolina Thread Trail regional network of trails. Importantly, this proposed trail extension provides a critical link for future trail connections along the Catawba Creek to connect to regional destinations such as the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden and the Seven Oaks Preserve Trail in Belmont, NC.
Project Description
The Catawba Creek Southeast Greenway Extension project will begin at the Catawba Creek Greenway trailhead off of Robinwood Road, just across the street from the Warlick Family YMCA. It will cross over the Catawba Creek via a pedestrian bridge and will follow the creek east and south approximately one-half mile. In this growing area of the community, this new extension of greenway will connect two new subdivisions, Robinson Oaks and Robinson Mills, and surrounding neighborhoods, to the existing three miles of the Avon & Catawba Creeks Greenway, the Warlick Family YMCA, the Southeast Recreation Center (National Guard Armory), Ferguson Park and Lineberger Park. Currently this project is in the conceptual design phase and will be funded primarily by the Robinson Oaks Development LLC and grant funding.
