GFD Grilling Safety

The Gastonia Fire Department wants to remind you to be safe while grilling or barbecuing.

According to statistics from the NFPA, United States Fire Departments respond to an average of 7,900 home fires involving grills or barbecues each calendar year.
Those 7,900 calls caused 10 civilian deaths, 120 reported injuries, and over $80 million in property damages.

Many of these types of fires can be prevented if the public follows a few simple guidelines:
  • When using barbecue grills on decks or patios, be sure to leave sufficient space in all directions from the siding and eaves of homes.
  •  Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use.
  • Keep children and pets far away from grills or barbecues.
  • When using charcoal grills, only use starter fluids designed for barbecue grills, and never add fluid after coals have been lit.
  • Before starting or lighting gas grills, be sure the hose connection is tight and check hoses carefully for leaks. Applying soapy water to the hoses will easily and safely reveal any leaks.
  • Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and have the grill repaired by a professional, if necessary.
If citizens have any questions, they are encouraged to call the Gastonia Fire Marshal's Office at 704-866-6807.
