Gastonia, N.C. - November 21, 2022 - Detectives from the Gastonia Police Department (GPD) have charged Jaterra Deborah Malisa Grant, age 25, of Georgia, with the attempted murder of her 24-year-old boyfriend (also from Georgia) after she shot him in the parking lot of a grocery store after a domestic dispute. Grant was arrested at a nearby store after fleeing the scene on foot.
At approximately 9:10 p.m. on November 20, GPD and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the parking lot of the Food Lion grocery store located at 2211 N. New Hope Road for the report of a shooting that just occurred.
During the investigation, detectives determined that Grant and the victim were traveling in the same car when they stopped in the parking lot of the Food Lion and were involved in a dispute. During the dispute, Grant exited the car and fired multiple shots from a handgun into the car. The victim, who was still inside the car, was struck once. After being shot, the victim drove the car to a nearby gas station that is located outside of the City of Gastonia limits and notified police of his location. The victim was taken to a local hospital with what are believed to be serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
After shooting her boyfriend, Grant ran away from the scene but was quickly arrested by officers when they located her at a nearby store. At the time of her arrest, Grant was still in possession of the handgun believed to have been used during the shooting.
Grant is charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill or seriously injure, and discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle. She is being held without bond.
