Update: April 3, 2023 - 61-year-old Clifford Barton Scoggin of Osceola Street, who was believed to have been shot by 58-year-old Calvin Black inside a home in the 300 block of Osceola Street on March 26 succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Gastonia, N.C. - March 27, 2023: The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into an officer-involved shooting by Gastonia Police officers that resulted in the death of 58-year-old Calvin Wayne Black of Osceola Street in Gastonia.
At approximately 5:05 a.m. on March 26, GPD officers responded to a home in the 300 block of Osceola Street for the report of a man armed with a gun and chasing a female in the parking lot.
Upon arrival, officers entered the home and were confronted by Black who was armed with a handgun. Two officers discharged their weapons striking Black.
Black was pronounced deceased at the scene.
During the preliminary investigation, officers located a 57-year-old woman who had been assaulted by Black. Officers also located a 61-year-old male inside the home who is believed to have been shot by Black prior to officers entering the home. The female victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The male victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The preliminary investigation determined that Black and the female may have known each other.
No officers were injured during this incident.
GPD will not be releasing the names of the officers involved in this shooting.
The Gastonia Police Department is conducting a parallel internal investigation. As is standard procedure, the officers involved in this shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
