Electric Services & Common Questions
Our experienced Electric staff members are here to assist you with a variety of electric service issues. If you are experiencing an outage in one area of your home, check your breakers first. If you are experiencing flickering or dimming lights, this could indicate a poor connection in the service line — contact Electric Utilities so a crew can evaluate it.
Tree limbs are often one of the biggest culprits in damaged electrical lines. The City of Gastonia has prescribed guidelines that crews follow when trimming trees.
The City Arborist is available to evaluate trees on City property or in City rights-of-way that may create a safety hazard to citizens or a sight problem at intersections.
Customers who want better protection from weather-related interruptions may want to consider converting their service to underground. Overhead service has a greater chance of being interrupted by natural causes such as wind and animals — tree limbs and squirrels are frequent culprits — so some customers opt to have the service line to the property buried to improve reliability.
Fees for an underground conversion start at $300, which covers digging the ditch, burying and covering the line, and filling the ditch back in. Additional fees may apply if crews must dig under driveways, flower beds, sidewalks, and the like. A customer may waive the fees by assuming all labor associated with digging the service ditch themselves.
Before starting any home-improvement project that involves digging, contact an underground line-locating service to find out whether buried lines or cables run through the area. By calling 811 you can avoid hazardous situations such as striking a gas line or slicing through an electric line.
The service contacts all local utilities that might have underground lines in the area you plan to dig. Know what's below — call 811 before you dig.
Customers may request to have the electric service line temporarily dropped or covered while performing work at their home — such as siding, painting, or tree trimming. This is a free service the City of Gastonia offers for customer safety. Contact Electric Utilities to arrange it.
