Suspect Charged after Pointing Handgun at Officers Yesterday Evening

Gastonia, N.C. - December 20, 2022: Detectives from the Gastonia Police Department (GPD) have charged Thomas Vernon Boone, Jr., age 55, of Gastonia with assault with a deadly weapon after he pointed a handgun at officers who were investigating a call-for-service yesterday evening at an apartment building on E. Hudson Boulevard.

At approximately 6:00 p.m. on December 19, GPD officers responded to an apartment building located in the 1200 block of E. Hudson Boulevard after a food delivery driver called police stating that a male suspect inside a ground-floor apartment pointed a gun at her while she was making a delivery.

GPD Officers knocked on the apartment door and identified themselves as Gastonia police officers. The male suspect opened the door armed with a handgun and pointed the gun at officers who were in the breezeway of the building. One GPD officer fired his duty weapon at the suspect, who then retreated into the apartment.

GPD Crisis Negotiators then began communicating with the suspect by telephone and urged him to peacefully surrender. After a brief negotiation, the suspect was peacefully taken into custody and identified as Boone. It was determined that Boone was uninjured and that he was not struck by any of the officer’s shots.

Boone was transported to the Gaston County Jail where he was charged with one count of assault, pointing a gun, and one count of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official. Boone is being held on a $100,000 bond.
